Что бы на главной были 3 котегории в которых тоже темы распологаются а снизу темы 

как тут 2 котегории снизу темы http://forum.interznak.ru/forums.php?forum=2

    Взять recentTopics и переделать его на показ тем из любой категории, которая будет считаться условно корневой.
